Scary places you shouldn’t travel to alone

It’s fair to say that there are some amazing places on this planet, but there’s also no doubt about the fact that there are some creepy places on this planet. Despite the fact that these destinations and abandoned locations have been uninhabited for many years, there’s something about the unknown that fills us with intrigue. Because of this, it should come as no surprise to learn that countless people make their way to these places every single year. Although you can visit them yourself, we’d advise that you don’t do so alone…

Poveglia, Italy

Venice is one of the most beautiful places that this world has to offer, but what if we told you that there was an island just a short boat ride away from Venice that has given people nightmares? Although this island is now vacant and unused, it was once used as a quarantine for those who had contracted the plague and other fatal diseases during the late 1700s. When the threat of illness came to an end, the island was then transformed into an asylum. It remained that way until 1968 when the paranormal activities on Poveglia forced it to shut down.

Hashima Island, Japan

Otherwise known as Battleship Island, Hashima Island lies around 15km off the coast of southern Japan and is a completely abandoned island that was once a thriving community for offshore workers. Although the island is now a tourist destination, there’s no doubt about the fact that it’s pretty creepy. That might have something to do with the fact that the buildings are almost perfectly preserved, aside from a few crumbling walls. Despite its size, the whole island is empty and quiet.

The Island of the Dolls, Mexico

Located in Mexico, the Island of the Dolls is one of those places that really does need to be seen to be believed – but it’s not for the fainthearted. After the previous owner became scared of the supposed ghost of a drowned woman, he began hanging dolls in the trees to scare away her spirit. However, the story suggests that the screams and wails just got worse as the years went by, so he continued to hang these dolls until he himself perished in the same spot, and in the same way as the woman. Today, there are thousands of dolls around the island.

Pripyat, Ukraine

Ghost cities have always been extremely popular with those who love the unknown and the taboo, and that’s probably why many people now make their way to this Zone of Alienation. Pripyat felt the full force of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, and the whole city was evacuated for the safety of those who lived there. Because the nuclear disaster has left such a lasting impression on the city, it has never been deemed safe for previous residents to make their way back to their homes. However, many companies do now offer guided tours for those interested in seeing this ghost city for themselves.

There are some extremely creepy places in this world, but what’s even creepier is the fact that many of them are open to the public. Countless tourists make their way to these places every single year, but it’s always best to take someone with you for moral support.
